1.5M is an installation work created in Florence in 2021. The work was made with a ping-pong table that was about to be discarded by a local club. I repainted the surface of the table, transforming an everyday object of leisure into an installation about relationship, distance, and bodily interaction.
The pattern on the table comes from a personal visual language that I have repeatedly used in my practice. It originally emerged from my observation and abstraction of grass: leaves, stems, and tangled lines are simplified and repeated until they form a system somewhere between natural texture, symbolic mark-making, and the trace of movement. Once applied to the ping-pong table, the pattern no longer functions merely as decoration, but becomes a visual field through which the ball, rackets, and bodies move.
Ping-pong is a game that establishes a relationship between players. Through the exchange of the ball, both sides influence and condition each other. The speed, force, and rhythm of the game continuously shift, expressing emotions such as tension, anger, indifference, or pleasure. During the game, the players must maintain a distance of approximately 1.5 meters, the same distance that people were required to keep during the Covid pandemic. It is a distance that offers safety and allows communication, but it also produces separation and limitation.
Perhaps the pandemic will pass, but this distance will always remain within the game. By reworking a discarded ping-pong table, the installation turns the physical structure of play into a metaphor for social distance, public space, and human connection during a time of crisis.
