Project Statement
Planting Plan began in 2022, when I started teaching at a university, and has continued as an ongoing photographic project. The series follows campus spaces, plant landscapes, and the bodily states of teachers and students as its primary lines of observation. It looks at the absurd experiences that become normalized, institutionalized, and landscaped within modern Chinese university education. In this project, “planting” is not only about growth. It also points to a condition of being arranged, disciplined, and fixed into a specific position. Obedience-based education repeatedly shapes posture, language, and modes of response, while teachers and students gradually become numb within repeated procedures, assessments, and performances. The figures in the photographs are often paused, staring, or absorbed by their surroundings. They appear like individuals planted into the structure of the university, belonging to it while also maintaining a subtle distance from it.
The series does not attempt to represent a single event directly. Instead, through continuous photographing, it records details inside the university education system that are difficult to narrate formally: seemingly accidental rules, repeated rituals, failed communication, packaged achievements, and the hidden but stable logic of interests behind various absurd phenomena. Here, the university is no longer only a place for knowledge production and intellectual training. It becomes a complex social sample where power, performance, obedience, desire, and survival strategies intersect. Planting Plan uses a calm photographic approach to show how people are shaped, adapted, and consumed within this environment, and how they may still preserve their own perception in its gaps.
